Access Channel 5 will air the public forum, “The Pros and Cons of GMO’s”. The forum, held by the Chautauqua County League of Women Voters (CCLWV) in Dunkirk, February 18, 2015.
Part of the League’s “Hot Topics” series, the first speaker was Jonathan Titus, a SUNY Fredonia biology professor, who described genetically engineered organisms “as a global change event because genetic engineering shatters the rules of evolution.” GMO foods he listed include Monsanto’s Roundup-ready corn and soy beans, cassava, papaya, bent grass (for golf), loblolly pine, enzymes for cheese making as well as bacteria and viruses used in medicines and vaccines.
The second speaker, Margaret Bruegel, a Forestville organic farmer and president of the Fredonia Farmers Market observed, “In 1996 FDA scientists warned that genetically engineered foods could cause allergies, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems. The person in charge of policy at the FDA, Monsanto’s former attorney, chief lobbyist and later Monsanto’s Vice President, ignored the scientists’ reports and allowed GMO’s into the market place without a single required, safety study.”
The program was filmed by the Mayville-based Snowshoefilms group, and will be aired at 3:00 and 9:00 PM beginning Saturday, March 14 with the last airing on Friday, March 20.
Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Sherman, and Westfield areas, and can be found on channel 21.4 on digital televisions without a cable converter.
The program may also be viewed after the initial airing at the station's web site http://ac5.weebly.com/
