Access Channel 5 will air the public forum on the North Chautauqua County Water District’s initiative beginning April 4. The forum was sponsored by the Chautauqua County League of Women Voters. Many regional officials, including north county mayors attended the forum.
Portland Town Supervisor Dan Schrantz told the group that according to a health department needs assessment, the seven communities involved in the water initiative have “critical deficiencies in supply, treatment, storage, and transmission” of water to residents. He described the advantages of a regional water district: reduce costs that individual communities would incur if each upgraded their systems separately, provide dependable, safe water and allow the district to receive state grants and low interest loans.
A.J. Dolce, mayor of Dunkirk, said “Dunkirk and Fredonia would act as suppliers of the water for the district and continue to operate independently.”
Fredonia Mayor Steve Keefe said,” With good quality water available along routes 5 and 20 – what a great area for potential growth.”
The public officials answered a series of well-thought-out questions from League members. Mayville resident Diane Hofner asked how the water drawn from Lake Erie will be tested for coal ash pollutants and what regulations would guard water safety since NRG will continue to burn coal as a backup to natural gas.
Others participating were Brocton Mayor Dave Hazelton, Jack Gaasch, Waste Water Operators Association of Chautauqua County, and Pat Christina.
The program was filmed by the Mayville-based Snowshoefilms group, and will be aired at 3:00 and 9:00 PM beginning Saturday, April 4 with the last airing on Friday, April 10.
Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Sherman, and Westfield areas, and can be found on channel 21.4 on digital televisions without a cable converter.
The program may also be viewed after the initial airing at the station's web site http://ac5.weebly.com/
