Hugh Butler will be the next person featured on the first show of the second season of "Chautauqua People." The program will air at 1:30 and 7:30 PM each day beginning on June 28 with the last airing on July 4.
Hugh and his wife Marsha learned about Chautauqua Institution when they came across large crowds attempting to enter through the old railroad station while travelling down Route 384 in 1988. They stopped and asked why there was so much activity in a relatively remote rural area, were told about the institution and subsequently permitted to step inside for a look without purchasing a gate pass. After this visit the Butlers immediately cancelled their reservation at a local hotel and moved onto the grounds while completing a business project nearly. The Butler family were soon regular summer visitors and eventually year-round residents of the Institution.
Hugh currently serves as President of the Chautauqua Property Owners Association. In this capacity he represents the interests of nearly 1500-property owners to the Chautauqua Institution administration and participates in the Trustees' activities. He played a key role in developing the Shared Space Initiative based upon his academic background in urban planning. He is active in the Mayville Chamber of Commerce and other community activities.
Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Chautauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, Westfield and Portland areas. Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner's analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter or on a digital television (channel 21.4) that has been recently autoscanned.
